Description
The architect formed a development team to rescue a historic barn
near downtown Battle Creek at the confluence of the Kalamazoo and
Battle Creek Rivers. The project was in a tax-free Renaissance Zone
and the architect was successful in achieving a National Historic
Building designation for the barn providing tax incentives for its
development. The barn was stripped of roof and wall shingles and
exterior insulation system with stucco finish simulated the barn's
original finish. Structural insulated panels covered the roof to
complete the insulated shell. The structure was reinforced and interiors
cleaned using sand blasting so structure could remain exposed. The
high-tech office building with skylights and operating windows houses
six companies. Fiberoptic and T1 cable service provides high speed
data communications. Exposed ductwork, radiant floors, furnaces
with humidification, emergency generator, pendant lighting, and
power/data raceways provide flexibility and easy access for adaptation.
